A lesson on how not to complain about someone or something you don’t like.

CASE STUDY: Uni students Rachel, Jen, Sally and Amy* complain about their lecturer

Rachel, Jen, Sally and Amy are standing in a hallway at university after a tutorial, talking about their frustrations with one of their subjects. Edit: ‘Talking’ is too weak a word. ‘Bitching about’, ‘venting’, or ‘ranting’ would actually be more appropriate. The four students are quite annoyed, angry and frustrated with both the subject itself and their tutor. Comments thrown into the conversation include: “Our tutor has no idea what she’s talking about, we just skip from one thing to the next”, “We’ve learnt all of this before, this stupid subject is just a waste of time”, “I can’t believe attendance counts as a mark – it’s because no one would be motivated to go if it wasn’t!”… and you get the idea. The students complain about every single thing that they thought was wrong with the subject, and their tutor.

After approximately 15 minutes into this heated discussion, a door opens behind the students.

The conversation is immediately silenced.

The students stare in muted horror at one another as who could it be but the tutor they were just complaining about emerges from behind the door, and walks down the hall. If only they had noticed the name printed on the outside of the door before they opened their mouths. If only.
